IP to Close Shorewood Facility
July 21, 2010 By: Packaging online staff Box BizShorewood Packaging, a subsidiary of International Paper Corp., will close its Newport News, Va.-based tobacco folding carton plant in October, the Virginian-Pilot reports. The closure will affect 35 workers. Shorewood Packaging President Mike Ukropina cited shifting customer demand and the economic recession for the closure.
Nearly one year ago, the Newport News plant released 105 workers when it shut down operations in its lithographic sector. During that time, the tobacco packaging operation employed close to 70 workers. The plant makes packaging for mainly the tobacco industry and has been operating since 1979.
