Rock-Tenn Buys Southern Container
NORCROSS, GA. — Rock-Tenn Co. has purchased Southern Container Corp. (SCC), a privately held containerboard producer and box maker, for $851 million in cash. The deal should close in late March. SCC operates the 720,000 ton per year Solvay mill, located near Syracuse, N.Y. It is one of the lowest cost recycled containerboard mills in North America. The company also operates eight integrated corrugated box plants, two sheet plants, and four high-impact graphics facilities, making it the largest preprinted linerboard manufacturer in North America.
Zumbiel Joins IPG
CINCINNATI—Zumbiel Packaging has been selected for inclusion of membership into the International Packaging Group (IPG), a nonprofit association of folding carton producers.
Caraustar Acquires Mayers
ATLANTA—Caraustar Industries Inc. has acquired Mayers Fibre Tube & Core. Caraustar has opened its fifth manufacturing operation for Protect-A-Board and Protect-A-Wrap edge and strap protectors.
Mayr-Melnhof Buys Field Packaging
VIENNA, AUSTRIA—Mayr-Melnhof Packaging has bought Field Packaging, GmbH Bremen, Germany. Mayr-Melnhof Karton AG has acquired a 53 percent shareholding in Al-Ekbal Printing & Packaging Co. in Jordan.
Cenveo Buys Rex Corp.
JACKSONVILLE, FLA.—Folding carton converter Rex Corp. is acquired by Cenveo Inc., based in Stamford, Conn. Rex joins the recently acquired Cadmus Whitehall Group.
CGL Invests $6.5M, Expands Capacity
STAUNTON, VA.—Folding carton converter Carded Graphics, LLC (CGL) will invest $6.5 million to expand manufacturing capacity here and create 35 new jobs.
Mondi Downsizes Operation
LARKHALL, SCOTLAND—Mondi Group will downsize a sheet feeding operation here after releasing restructuring plans regarding the downsizing of six converting facilities in Europe.
Diamond Uses Renewable Energy
ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Diamond Packaging is purchasing clean, renewable wind energy for 100 percent of its electrical energy requirements through RG&E and wind energy marketer and developer Community Energy. President Kirsten Werner and CEO Karla Fichter have acquired the remaining ownership of the company to make it a 100 percent women-owned business.

Rengo Buys Asahi
OSAKA, JAPAN—Rengo Co., Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer of corrugated board, boxes and paperboard packaging, has acquired a majority stake in Asahi Shiko K.K., a Japanese manufacturer of carton boxes.
INSTALLATIONS
Chazelles, France-based Packetis has implemented the VantagePoint Accelerate™ Advanced Scheduling module. MeadWestvaco Europe has chosen to implement the estimating module of VantagePoint Accelerate core business software in its plant operations in the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and France.
Montgomery, Ala.-based Capitol Container has purchased the Packaging Software Suite from Advanced Software. Knight Paper Box, a Chicago-based division of Prospect Partners, has implemented the packaging software suite from Advanced Software.
The first CONTROL-ING® laminator produced by Simon Corrugated Machinery s.l. from Spain was successfully installed in Cartonagem Cardoso in Portugal. As the machine was shipped "as one piece" on the lorry, installation time was limited to strictly four days, followed by a training of 10 days for the crew. This machine is the reel-to-sheet type equipped with an additional Corserve bottom feeder to be able to do reverse laminating, too (sheet-to-sheet).

Pflug Packaging, San Leandro, Calif., and Gared Graphics, Camarillo, Calif., have each purchased for their facilities Top Gun, which is part of Amtech's comprehensive Imaginera system.
ACQUISITION
Solarsoft Business Systems, Toronto, purchased VantagePoint Systems, Vancouver, for $10.2 million in cash. Solarsoft is a developer of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
MISCELLANEOUS
Cargill received the Golden award for its C*Starch Booster in the supplier category by the French professional association of the corrugated board industry (ONDEF). This competition, "les Etoiles de l'Ondulé" ("Stars of Corrugating" in English), in now in its fourth year. For this year's competition, ONDEF has created a new category dedicated to suppliers, which actively contribute to creating value for the corrugating industry. Participants were judged on four main criteria: level of innovation, ability to work in partnership, added value for the corrugating industry, and performances versus what is already existing. The jury was composed of industry experts and journalists.
Eltete TPM Ltd. Opens Shanghai Plant
LOVIISA, FINDLAND—Eltete TPM Ltd. has opened a brand new factory in Shanghai. A new production plant of more than 12,000 sq meters will increase production up to 20,000 metric tons per year. Two other production plants are located in southern and northern parts of China. Shanghai Eltete Technology Co. Ltd. produces 100 percent recyclable carton edgeboards, pallets, boxes and other transport packaging materials, mainly for the Chinese, Japanese and South-Korean markets. The main customers are Chinese export companies such as Nokia Siemens Networks, Canon, and Pioneer.

Promotions
- 1. A leadership succession plan for Great Northern Corp., Appleton, Wis., will be implemented at its annual board meeting in April. At that time, John Davis will assume the position of corporate ceo, in addition to his role as president of the Packaging Group. William Raaths, ceo since 2002, will become chairman of the board.
- 2. The Walki Group had several promotions in the company. Gunilla Laakso was appointed vice president and general manager of the Business Area Paper Packaging. Arno Wolff, presently director of SBA Paper Packaging, was promoted vice president, sales and marketing of the Business area. Wolfgang Thissen was appointed vice president and general manager of the Consumer Board business unit. David Ingham was appointed vice president, sales and marketing of the Consumer Board business unit. Mats Holti was appointed vice president, Technology.
- 3. Liberty Carton Co., a Minneapolis-based division of Liberty Diversified Industries (LDI), made several organizational changes — including promoting Mike Snowball from general manager to vice president, packaging. Liberty Carton promoted Matt Rovnak from general manager of its Dallas/Fort Worth facility to operations director for its packaging operations in Golden Valley and Brooklyn Park. In addition, Todd Gardner is named as general manager of Liberty Carton's corrugated paper manufacturing plant in Kansas City.
- 4. Alan King is the new ceo at York Container Co. He served the company as financial, marketing and strategic planning consultant for 18 months prior to agreeing to occupy the newly created position.
- 5. Federal Way, Wash.-based Weyerhaeuser Co. named Daniel Fulton as president, which could set in motion a plan that includes the retirement of CEO Steven Rogel, 65, by the end of 2009. In addition, Weyerhaeuser has named Claire Grace vice president.
New Hires
- 1. Jim Keller became president of the International Corrugated Case Association (ICCA), Elk Grove Village, Ill. He succeeds Heather Marshall, who resigned prior to her maternity leave. Keller's industry experience includes leading the second-largest corrugated manufacturing company in the world, as well as holding past leadership positions within ICCA, the Fibre Box Association (FBA), the World Containerboard Organization (WCO), and the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA).
- 2. Sun Chemical appointed Rudi Lenz as ceo and president.
- 3. Because of increased sales volume, Avanti, Derbyshire, U.K., appointed David Mellors to the role of project manager for the company.
- 4. Sharp International and FRIESE GmbH have hired Scott Buckman as part of FRIESE Corrugating Rolls' expansion into North America.
- 5. Sonoco Products Co., Hartsville, S.C., named James Morris division vice president-paper North America sales and marketing.
- 6. Steve Main joined St. Jude Packaging's Dallas office as its Southwest packaging consultant.
Retirements
- 1. Don Hohne retired from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America after 24 years of service to the company. Hohne joined Mitsubishi in 1983, and most recently held the position of senior engineering manager.
- 2. Eve Rae plans to retire after 31 years of service with Smurfit-Stone and its predecessors, effective Feb. 29. Effective Nov. 5, Bruce McLennan was promoted to succeed Rae as vice president of international sales for market pulp and containerboard.
Obituaries
- 1. Alessandro Agnati, president, Agnati SpA, Vimercate, Italy, passed away on Nov. 7. He joined the family-run business, which is celebrating its 75th year, in 1955. By the early 1960s, he was working with his father, Angelo, to develop further the company's corrugator. His son Vittorio and daughter Donatella have been working at the company for years.
- 2. Meredith Emerson, 24, of Buford, Ga., died Jan. 4. While her death made national news as the missing hiker who disappeared New Year's Day, Emerson was a sales trainee at Progress Container & Display in Winder, Ga.
