Editor's Comment: Still Committed to You - the Reader

August 1, 2009 By: Esther Durkalski Hertzfeld Paperboard Packaging

We're in the midst of tough times. In the 94 years this magazine has been produced, the industry has had its up and downs — some worse than others. This may be one of the worse times, it is survivable. While financial experts say things are getting better, that doesn't help companies affected by the roller coaster we've all been riding for the past year.

But there's something that hasn't changed. The thing that drew many of us into this business — and keeps us here today, is our passion.

The passion for quality, innovation, and the people that make this industry great. That passion will continue to fuel Paperboard Packaging for another 94 years.

In order to weather these difficult times, Questex Media Group, parent company of Paperboard Packaging, has made some changes to the magazine. The magazine will now be packaged with its sister publication, the weekly Official Board Markets. Paperboard Packaging will appear with Official Board Markets last issue of the month and will appear 12 times a year.

Paperboard Packaging also will be available digitally for those readers who do not receive Official Board Markets. Please look to the Packaging-Online.com website for more information about this move or contact Audience Development Manager Antoinette Sanchez-Perkins at 216-706-3750 or asanchez-perkins@questex.com. Antoinette can answer any questions you may have.

Paperboard Packaging will continue to be the business resource for the corrugated and folding carton industries — we will continue to deliver fresh insight and analysis of the issues, newsmakers and events that shape the industry. Our commitment to quality and excellence will continue. Some of the legacy projects that Paperboard Packaging initiated will continue, such as:

  • 1. The Paperboard Packaging Resource Directory and Buyer's Guide
  • 2. The Paperboard Packaging Annual Census Report
  • 3. The Box Buyer Survey
  • 4. Exclusive plant profiles
  • 5. And much more

This current slump has also given me cause to reflect on my first days in the industry — nine years ago. When I joined Paperboard Packaging and Official Board Markets nine years ago as an associate editor, I knew nothing about the "cardboard" industry. Now, it is an industry I have a great passion for and there are people I care greatly about.

Our industry weathered the downturn after 9/11. We will make our way through this stretch of rough waters as well. We'll continue to be leaner, wiser, smart, savvier and tougher, ready to take advantage of improving conditions when the climate finally shifts.

Here's to a better business climate in the coming months and throughout 2010.
