Fall 2010 Online Extra: Must-Do Corrugator Checks
September 24, 2010 By: Tom Pearce, Pearce Corrugated ConsultingEvery corrugator should be routinely measuring and checking the following points. “Routinely” is defined as a regular frequency that’s different based on the variable being checked. Pressure vessels may be once per shift, but adhesive checks may be after every batch and hourly on the machine. Routine does not mean when someone has time or happens to remember it.
On machine:
• Pressure vessel temperatures
• Corrugator roll temperatures
• Pressure roll or belt temperatures
• Glue and meter roll gaps and TIR (Total Indicted Run out)
• Starch viscosity, gel point and temperature
• Splicer operational PM checks
Centerlining:
• Starch settings and gaps
• Paper temperatures
• Pressure vessel % wrap
• Machine speed
• Fiber tear and pin adhesion checks
Machine condition and maintenance:
• Gap measurements and their calibration to the digital readouts
• Splicer maintenance
• Glue roll applicator roll speeds to board speeds
• Corrugator alignment
• Roll alignment
• Double backer condition checks
