SSCC Workers Not Offered Severance
March 11, 2009 By: Packaging online staff Box BizUnion workers at Chicago-based Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.’s (SSCC) St. Joseph, Mo., box plant, set to close April 7, have not been offered severance packages, the St. Joseph Press reports. Workers will qualify for federal unemployment and will receive earned vacation pay. There were 85 workers at the plant who went on strike Dec. 1 to Feb. 20 after working without a contract since March 2008. SSCC plans to lay off all 86 hourly employees and 15 salaried employees there no earlier than April 7.
